Alan Pughsley temporarily took over the deputy chief constable role in January this year before being appointed permanently on March 18.
He said: I`m absolutely thrilled to be leading the force on behalf of the chief constable and the police authority, during exciting but challenging times. It is a real privilege to be offered this opportunity and I will do all I can to ensure that Kent Police continues to deliver a quality policing service to the people of Kent and Medway.
Since acting as deputy chief constable, he has been fundamental in leading a restructure programme, as well as contributing to the review of reducing Kents policing areas from six to three.
Mr Pughsley joined the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in 1984, leading on murder investigations, kidnap and contract killings, firearms and drug related crimes.
He also worked with Surrey Police as a detective superintendent before returning to the MPS as a borough commander in Lewisham, South London. Mr Pughsley was also responsible for 640 police officers and 180 police staff to deliver national crime reduction targets and improve customer confidence.
Four candidates were shortlisted for the role of deputy chief constable, taking part in an intense two-day interview process.
