The minimum height restriction placed on recruitment to the French police has been removed by a new decree announced by French Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.

The 5ft 3in minimum height for recruits will no longer apply to the Police Nationale, customs officers or prison guards.

The restriction was gradually lifted in the UK in the 1990s.
