A temporary footbridge in flood-ravaged Workington has been named after PC Bill Barker, who died directing traffic off the town’s Northside Bridge when it collapsed last month.

Barker Crossing is the first pedestrianised link across the River Derwent to unite the north and south sides of the Cumbrian town since the floods.
Insp Mark Wear, head of Workington neighbourhood policing team, said: “Bill was committed to serving his community and for him to be remembered in this way is a tribute to his memory.”
