Dissidents blamed for car bomb outside NIPB HQ

Dissident republicans are believed to be responsible for a car bomb left outside the Northern Ireland Policing Board’s (NIPB) headquarters, while four men have been arrested for firing at police officers in County Fermanagh.
The car containing the 400lb explosive device was driven through a barrier by two men who then ran away.
The gun attack, also believed to be the work of dissident republicans, is understood to have been targeted at a police officer who lived in the village. No injuries were reported.
Three of those arrested for the shooting were detained by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), while the Irish police arrested a fourth man in County Leitrim on Saturday night.
The fourth detainee is currently being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
Northern Ireland Security Minister Paul Goggins said those behind the attacks showed reckless and criminal intent.
PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said the car bomb was a substantial device which had the potential to cause significant damage.
“None of this will deter us from the delivery of excellent good policing to all people and communities in Northern Ireland and we are determined to bring those people responsible to justice,” he said.
On Thursday November 18, another device was found without detonating in Friary Road, Armagh. Board Chairman, Barry Gilligan said: “At today’s meeting, members roundly condemned those responsible [for the car bomb]. It was very fortunate that no one was killed or seriously injured by this viable device and the people behind this reckless act had complete disregard for public safety.
“The member of the public who alerted the police is to be commended.”
